ESC project in Medborgarskolan
About Medborgarskolan in Sweden
Medborgarskolan exists all over Sweden. Medborgarskolan is a study organisation with humanistic values that was founded in 1940. The motivation for people to learn more was to influence their own living conditions, but also to influence and change conditions in society. Today’s education is based on the same driving force; that knowledgeable and committed citizens of society are one of the fundamental building blocks of democracy.
Medborgarskolan offer meeting places for development together with others – both physically and online and our activities are open for everyone. With education, competence education and school activities, we engage over one million people each year within many different subjects such as crafts, languages, computer knowledge, food, music, theater, song and dance. Our trademark promise is: ”Where interest turns to knowledge”. We work actively to make “people education” attractive and we are passionate about lifelong learning. With our
values, joy, dedication and competence, we are working
to strengthen democracy.
Our fundamental value system has four core values:
-Focus on the individual
-Intrinsic value of knowledge
About Medborgarskolan Region Öst
“Medborgarskolan Region Öst” is one of the eight regions that Medborgarskolan have in Sweden. It’s situated in
the southern part of Sweden and Växjö is where the head office for the region is situated.
In Växjö, Medborgarskolan has put emphasis on dancing and music. We're now the biggest dance studio in Växjö - with reference to the number of students, dance teachers on staff and our different dance styles offered. The
dance studio, where the volunteer will be placed and work, is called Kulturama Preparandum.
The volunteer work
The volunteer will mainly work with our dance studio Kulturama Preparandum. This includes how to manage our attendance lists,
to report, sort and file them. The volunteer will learn how a study circle works, and are encouraged to create their
own. The volunteer can learn how to market for example a dance course, to create posters, how to spread them
and develop a good marketing idea together with us.
Examples of typical volunteer tasks:
- Sort and file the attendance list for the different courses
- Being an extra resource which includes helping the dance teachers, the students and the parents during
classes and keeping our facilities look good
- Attend/assist during dance classes to learn more about teaching if wanted
- Being an extra resource at different performances and learn the logistics behind creating everything from a small performance with a few dance groups or music groups (bands) to a big performance at a concert hall with all our 600 students.
- Do inventory of the dance and music equipment
- Do daily tasks at the dance school (work at reception, keeping the facility clean and etc.
Accommodation and local transport
The volunteers receive food-money and pocket every month. The Food money is 2 000 SEK and pocket money is 150€ in SEK. The volunteer will live in shared apartment either outside Växjö or in the City, having his/her own room and sharing bathroom, kitchen and other common areas. The volunteer will get either a bus card or bicycle to commute, depending on the distance from our office to the housing. There is Internet in the accommodation.
We are looking for volunteers that are open towards working in a multicultural environment and have an interest in
culture, especially dance and music. It is also important that the volunteer share Medborgarskolan’s idea of a
pleasure-filled learning and the humanistic view that is the core of Medborgarskolan. Besides this, it is positive that
the candidates are:
-Interested in sharing his/hers culture
-Interested in teaching and dancing
